Representation Matters: The Power of Seeing Kids Who Look Like You

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Michelle Yeoh in a martial arts movie in the 1980s. As a young girl, I’d never seen anyone quite like her on screen—an Asian woman who could be strong, beautiful, graceful, and a complete badass all at once. She didn’t just defy expectations—she shattered them. She made me realize that strength wasn’t limited to a particular look or gender, and beauty wasn’t just about softness; it could be fierce, resilient, and powerful too.

That moment stuck with me. It sparked something deep inside me, an understanding that I too could carry myself with grace, confidence, and strength. Watching Michelle Yeoh on screen, I saw a reflection of myself that I hadn’t yet seen in other heroes. She was an inspiration, showing me that strength comes in all forms, and we don’t have to choose between being powerful and being ourselves.

That’s why The Heart of a Warrior: Affirmations to Empower Kids is so important. Just like that pivotal moment for me, I want every child to see characters, role models, and affirmations that reflect their true potential—especially those who haven’t always seen themselves in the stories told by the world. Representation matters because it allows kids to recognize that they too can be strong, brave, and unstoppable—no matter their background, race, gender, or experiences.

In my book, I share empowering affirmations to help kids tap into their inner warrior. It’s designed to help them stand tall in their power, grounded in self-belief, resilience, and courage. Just as Michelle Yeoh taught me that strength and grace could coexist, I want to inspire kids to understand that they, too, are capable of embodying those qualities. They can be both soft and fierce, gentle and strong, determined and kind. They are already enough, just as they are.

When kids see themselves represented—whether on screen or in stories—they begin to imagine themselves as warriors in their own lives. They start believing that they have the strength to face challenges, stand up for what’s right, and protect what matters most.
